Hike or Bike on the Local Beaches of The Hague
Located on the coast of The Hague, between Scheveningen and Kijkduin, stands Westduinpark, one of the largest nature reserves in The Hague. Westduinpark has a widely diverse landscape with dense forests and open spaces, hiking and biking roads, which make it the perfect place to catch a breath of fresh sea air.
Thanks to its diverse landscape, the dunes are a natural habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna, including animals like sand lizards and foxes. In the dunes you can also find occasionally Scottish Highland cows that roam freely in the dunes and are easily approachable (however, its recommended to keep a distance of at least 25 meters, specially if there are calves in the herd).
The beautiful natural landscape of Westduinpark makes it a favorite spot for locals of Den Haag to take a peaceful, relaxing walk with family or friends (dogs are allowed on a leash in the dunes) or an exciting bike ride with steep hills that offers a beautiful view on the sea and the city.
The dunes are open to the public throughout the whole year, including the winter months. If you decide to visit the dunes in The Hague, make sure to keep your eyes open for exit roads leading to Zuiderstrand, a secret alternative to Scheveningen loved by locals, often referred to as "peaceful beach", there you can find a small number of genuine beach pavilions that offers delicious food and drinks that you can enjoy while sitting by the sand, spectating a beautiful sunset.
